This paper provides an economic analysis that compares the profitability and land management capability of four different organic cropping systems used to produce winter squash (Cucurbita pepo cv. ‘Delicata’) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata cv.’ Farao’). The organic cropping systems are part of a long term experiment designed for vegetable production in the Northeast, and designed to maintain ecological integrity and contribute to environmental stewardship. Our research addresses the causal chain from soil processes to economic outcomes including soil quality, efficiency in cycling of nutrients, off-farm impacts, pressures from weeds, insects and diseases, crop yield and quality, and marketing opportunities. Interactive crop budgets were... |

ABSTRACT: Insects commonly well-known as white grubs are the larval phase of beetles that belong to the Melolonthidae (Coleoptera). This family contains an expressive number of insect species that have different bioecological functions in the agroecosystems in the adult and immature phases. In four of five trophic levels, they are primary and secondary consumers, secondary producers and decomposers. In Brazil there are registred about 1008 species of Melolonthidae whose larvae live in the soil. Some of them are considered important pests; normally the larval phase feed the crop roots causing damages. The symptoms occur in patches with smaller plants, yellow leaves, and drastic reduction in the plant population. The occurence of those insects in the... |

The Secretaria de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación (SAGARPA) and the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro (UAAAN) have signed agreements, looking a vision more attached to the reality of the conditions, factors and obstacles that affect productive process in Mexico, in order to generate recommendations that increase the efficiency of the involved programs of support with the farming production. Derived of the participation in the Rapid Assessment of Program Acquisition of Productive Assets: Component Protected Agriculture 2008, the characteristics and the context are approached in which the agriculture protected in Mexico is develops. The definition of “protected agriculture” settles down, their characteristics are... |

In the last few decades, the discussion about small holders agriculture has been emphasized due to debates on sustainable development, job and income increase, food security and local development. Due to the fact of small farmers group being heterogeneous, either from the economic, social or cultural point of view, this research is focused on small-holder vegetable producers located in the cities of São Carlos and Araraquara. The main objective is to understand the distributive arrangement used by the small-holder vegetable producers and their main problems. For the development of the research, a multi case study was used, based on primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained through a half-structuralized questionnaire applied to the... |

Consuming raw food like lettuce may carry protozoa cysts and helminth eggs, causing parasitic infections. Therefore, the parasitological analysis of this type of food it’s important for public health because it provides data on the hygiene conditions in which these vegetables were produced, transported, processed and handled until the ingestion. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of parasitic structures in samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) sold in self-service restaurants in São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The samples were randomly collected in 20 locations in duplicate, prepared according to the method of Hoffman, Pons, and Janer (1934) and analyzed with an optical light microscopy. The parasitic structures found were Cysts... |
